ITINERARY

Your journey begins near Thissio, where you will meet your licensed guide and step into a lesser-known chapter of Athens’ history—one defined by centuries of cultural coexistence, faith, and survival.

Your first stop is the Holocaust Memorial on Melidoni Street, a place of remembrance dedicated to the Greek Jews who perished during World War II. Here, your guide will share the story of a once-thriving community and the profound impact of the Holocaust on Jewish life in Athens and across Greece.

A short walk brings you to the city’s two central synagogues, each representing a distinct tradition.

The Beth Shalom Synagogue reflects the Sephardic heritage of Greek Jews, with its elegant architectural style and post-war reconstruction symbolizing renewal and continuity. Nearby, the Etz Hayyim Synagogue represents the Romaniote tradition—one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe, with roots dating back over two millennia.

Depending on visitor protocols and with valid identification, it may be possible to enter Beth Shalom Synagogue during your visit.

Continuing your walk, you will explore the Ancient Agora, where archaeological discoveries have revealed one of the earliest known synagogues in Europe—highlighting the deep historical connection between Jewish presence and classical Athens.

Your route then takes you through Yiousouroum, once the heart of Athens’ Jewish quarter. Today known for its lively flea market, the area still carries echoes of its past, offering a unique blend of history and modern Athenian life.

The experience concludes at the Jewish Museum of Greece, home to a remarkable collection of religious artifacts, textiles, photographs, and personal testimonies. While your guide will introduce you to the museum’s highlights, official tours are conducted by specialized in-house guides.

Private museum guiding services can be arranged upon request (additional cost applies).

At the end of your tour, your guide will be happy to offer personalized recommendations for further exploration, dining, or cultural experiences in Athens.
